About:- Balsam is a medium-tall, rainy season annual that is grown for its beautiful flowers. The flowers are long lasting on the plant and are quickly replaced by new flowers. Balsam is one of the few flowers, planted from flower seeds, that can do well in sun or shade as long as it has plenty of moisture.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:-
- Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date to keep it tender. Balsam seed is extremely easy to germinate.
- The closer these plants are, the taller they will arise, so space accordingly (impatiens plants can get anywhere between 6 and 30 inches tall). For flower beds, plant 8 to 12 inches apart to let the plants stay low to the earth.
- Do not cover the seeds with soil, as they need light to germinate.
- Consider pinching back stems of young plants when they reach about 4” tall.
- Plants may self-seed in the garden.
GROWING REQUIREMENTS:-
PEST: The plant is susceptible to the following pests and diseases- Powdery mildew, Leaf miners, Oedema, Parasitic nematodes, Spider mites, Flower thrips, Root knot nematode, Whiteflies, Aphids, Impatiens necrotic spot virus, Fungal leaf spots, Rhizoctonia stem rot. These pests and diseases may leave the plant leaves affected or can eat the leaf tissues of the plant. Infected leaves become covered with a white to gray powdery growth.
SOIL: Grows well in heavy clay soils. It also prefers a moist well-drained humus rich soil.
SPOT: These plants can grow in full sun and can tolerate part shade.
WATERING: Remember to water these plants regularly. Keep them moist, but not too wet. If the plants dry out, they will lose their leaves. If you over-water the plants, this could encourage fungal diseases.
TEMPERATURE: This variety require a soil temperatures that should be kept higher than 20°C [68°F] to ensure good germination.
HOW TO HARVEST:-
- The ripe seed pods explode when touched, thus, the seeds can be challenging to collect.
- Bagging the pods with small circles of fabric before they ripen can be an effective means to catch the seed.
- Alternatively, the entire plant can be repeatedly shaken over a container to cause the ripe pods to release the seeds.
- Clean the seeds as much as possible, then store them in a cool and dry place.
